A Jolly Greengrass Festival -- Champions Declared
« on: May 03, 2020, 05:57:25 PM »
Essembra's people are chattering about the success of the Greengrass festival, held at the grounds of Aencar's Keep as is tradition. The jolly event has boosted morale among the commonfolk, and with merchants who have suffered the predations of bandits and brigands on the roads over the past few seasons. Folk cheered the young Lord Jarath Burlisk - ever resplendent in his Tempuran armour - for his short but worthy speech and his enthusiasm at the many martial games held.

Among those games:

The annual pie-eating contest attracted previous champion Heliott of Mistletarn who - alas! - has been beaten. The winner was the dwarven adventurer Thror Axehand who proved he had the biggest belly in the realm! Honourable mentions to Swordmajor Rigem of Hap of the Lord's Men, Shug Hammerfell, and Heliott the Mage who all gave a valiant eating effort but were all bested in that final round. Thror won himself a case of ale from Tantul's brewery and a year's supply of ale (subject to conditions, as Sabeth Tantul hastens to add).

The notable dwarf Shug Hammerfell redeemed himself and won the day in target shooting with his skill in dwarven axe-throwing, beating archers for his accuracy. For his skill, Shug won a quiver of magical arrows graciously donated by Ramshan Doon of Adderposts.

Dalesmen Ronald "Shirtless Ron" Fairfax and Mill "The Naked Stranger" Menson took to wrestling in the ring and put on an excellent show - neither man quite able to get the upper hand after many rounds, the lads called it a draw. True Dales sportsmanship! With no winner, there was no prize - however they were treated to ales and pats on the back by Dalesfolk and visitors who enjoyed the match.

A joust between the paladin Roland "the Resolute" and Dalesman Mill Menson capped off the spectacles of the day; the paladin showed his horsemanship training off well to put Mill in the dirt. Again, good sportsmanship on display as the two shook hands and laughed together as Roland was declared the winner. Both men walked away with a prize from Battledale's coffers and the winner received a marvel from Heliott the mage - a magical stone steed!

There was also a marvellous circus display from the popular Pogo Bunions - showcasing strange beasts and magicks by the painted gnome - to the delight of the common folk.

Famed travelling fortune teller Madame Aestrella the Seer was also in attendance, offering fortune telling to festival goers. Entertainment was provided by the Bard Ghara Ng'Grathk who played and sand a special song she had composed in honour of Aencar's legacy (which Lord Jarath appeared to enjoy!), along with ambient music provided by popular Dales bards Harun & Morressyn, and Buttercup of Essembra.

Finally, this year, bar services were provided by local brewery Tantul's Old Tankard, featuring their signature brew: Tantul's Dark, it's like a meal in a drink! -- available at all good taverns.
