Quarantine!
« on: July 01, 2011, 09:29:48 PM »
A shadow passed over Essembra in the night, a dark mass that seemed blacker than the night sky itself. In its wake, only death and despair was left. The dragon that attacked the township did not burn it to the ground. It did not roar in rage, nor did it demand tribute. They say it came from the heart of the woods, where it has created itself a realm of festering rot and disease.

It delivered its dark gift silently, and it left us to die -- slowly and agonizingly.

A green noxious cloud settles over Essembra, thick and heavy and impervious to the wind and the rain. At first there was coughing - then there were fevers and vomiting, and now there are people walking the streets, screaming in pain that no man should experience. Senses have taken leave of those in which this sickness festered. They are hearing things none other hear and clawing their eyes out for fear of things none other see. Dementia. Men are killing their peers to spare them the agony and the shame. Families sit huddled in their cellars, where the vapor did not yet spread, hoping to live off of the untainted air within. Some are starting to finally die now, they say, their insides turned into a thick vile mush that kills any who touch it.

But no sane person walks the streets lest the deadly fumes, or the piles of corpses that litter the streets infect them too. People sit crowded in the inn rooms and the bedchambers are full to the brim with the sick and the dying.

The temples of Tempus and Gond are at a loss; theirs is not a work of healers, but of warriors and craftsmen. Spells of the arcane and the divine have proven futile in fighting this sickness away, but some speak, hopefully, of naturally made remedies being attempted successfully by those with a knack for the healing arts.

Lord Ilmeth has ordered to bar the gates -- this disease, this plague, it is infectious, passing from one man to the next -- he wishes to stop it from spreading to other dales. Essembra is under quarantine, and none shall enter or leave until the plague is rid of, and the cloud lifted... if at all. None are too thrilled with the humble decision, ethics be damned; a black market boomed overnight, offering promise of delivering goods and medicine into the town from elsewhere, and some claim that the highest bidders may even buy their own way out of the premises... if they can outrun the Lord's Men's arrows.

What has Essembra done to deserve this? Few can say. The dragon, some whisper, spoke a simple demand in the common tongue - "The circlet," he said, "Give it, and I shall spare this cattle."

Some recent happenings and news spreading among survivors who are brave enough to travel the streets and check on the welfare of others...
  • A paladin has bravely constructed a pyre to burn the dead on Battle Court
  • A Doomsayer of Talona has been struck down and killed by an elf and a halfling.
  • A group of looters has taken the Elf on the Flying Stag as their headquarters. The fate of the true owners of the establishment is unknown, but many presume them to be dead.
  • The looters at the Elf on the Flying Stag supposedly have a stash of medicine that they will sell to others for a hefty price
  • The Lonely Mermaid seems to have been abandoned. There are no corpses to be found.
  • Ilmeth hasn't been seen, and his keep is secured like, well, a fortress. Archers patrol the walls, and the gate is manned by men at arms. There are rumors that he escaped the city.
  • Looters have been seen in Battle Court, looting stalls.
  • Most other inns are mentioned having a similar atmosphere as the Watchful Eye, with survivors and staff alive.
  • The Hitching Post seems to have avoided looting and Rhannon Manycoats seems to be holding her own.
  • The Bold Banners is mostly abandoned, but fine. The owner has kept the area safe with her magic. Survivors mostly stay in their rooms.
  • The Swordpoint Shrine is overrun by sickness, corpses pile outside its doors.
  • The House of Gond has barred its doors, fearing the fate of the Tempurans.
  • The Four Flying Fish tavern seems to be safe.
  • Looters from the Stag attacked the Watchful Eye and attempted to burn the place down. The Inn was mildly damaged, the looters were killed.
  • One of the Watchful Eye's doors has been barricaded, the other seems to be open for visitors.
  • The Green Door has been abandoned. The owners, a bit wary of being alone, went to the Silver Tap.
  • The Swordpoint Shrine is flooded with the sick. The acolytes themselves are sick, as well. They are not handling the disease well at all, being warriors and not healers, but are trying to help whoever comes anyway.

Perhaps most significantly, it is shared among the adventuring community that there are people in the Watchful Eye who know how to slow the progression of the sickness.

Her skin is pale, her eyes are red,
Her leaden voice commands the dead,
To rise and stand beside their dreadful queen.
No mortal power escapes her thrall,
Her hunger will consume us all,
And even now I hear her call: Jolene

More updates spread by the brave survivors who venture from house to house to check on the sick and surviving.

  • Wild dogs, sick with plague and hunger, are seen roaming the streets.
  • The plague is taking its toll on vegetation, it's subtle for most plants, but plants exposed to the slick substance are noticably more twisted.
  • Duskar Flamehaern, of Adderposts, and his daughters have disappeared.
  • Eritt the waitress has left the Four Flying Fish. Those at the Four Flying Fish aren't sure where she went.
  • Dunstable and his cat have disappeared, presumably taking refuge in one of his well-warded warehouses.
  • Durn remains at his forge, as Greyarch remains in the tannery.
  • Findar escaped to the House of Gond.
  • The Old Hoof has been abandoned, no living convicts remain.
  • Kernes (of the flophouse) ditched the place pretty quick. He's at the Four Flying Fish.
  • The Stag's looters are dead and scattered. Their leader, a man named Big John, has been slain. It's believe he and his gang were the main force behind the group.
  • Cellista Rye and others (including children) who survived the plague and the takeover at the Flying Stag have been rescued from the looters and now stay at the Watchful Eye
  • Four Flying Fish is finally abandoned, the survivors have moved to the Watchful Eye.

As the days go by, a glimpse of the moon finally shines through the fog. The cloud lightens, it appears - beginning to finally disperse, however slowly. The doomsayers are fewer now, and a glimmer of hope that the worst of it may soon be over is sparked in Essembran hearts.

Rain.

Finally, there is rain. Though the drops are heavy, muddy, and full with traces of the venomous gas that cloaks Essembra, the sign is cause for small celebration among some of the townsfolk. The cloud is finally beginning to scatter, and has become thin enough for the rain to pierce through. The next morning, the rays of sunshine finally grace the city streets once again - and the clean air begins, slowly but surely, to push the remnants of the dragon's breath away...

While Essembra ails, rumors from out the walls say that the soldiers of the Abbey of the Sword have already begun to prepare for the day after the plague is gone; their men assembling and readying themselves to exact vengeance upon the wyrm that has started this all... and that among them some adventurers are to be found, helping to track down artifacts and people of note both.

Far away, deep in the Cormanthor, the people of the forest are said to have determined to do the same.

But will they unite?

With the coming of the 5th of Flamerule, the last traces of the poisonous cloud dissipate away. The birds return to Essembra's blue skies, and citizens dare poke their heads out of the doors. And while the sick and the ailing can still be heard from the bedchambers and the alleyways, the primary source of the sickness is, without a doubt, gone.

As Essembrans go about burying their dead, and easing others' transition to death, the quarantine is slowly lifted. There is no persecution of those who have fled or smuggled in and out of the city; most all agree that there are more important things to take care of, now.

Those adventurers who found themselves struck with the plague find that with the fog gone, the treatments found during the turmoil seem to work much better - and eventually -- slowly but surely -- they may be cured.
